PA Wellington Allen Curnow, one of New Zealand's senior and most respected poets, has been selected as the 1983 Katherine Mansfield Fellow to Menton. France, the Internal Affairs Department announced yesterday. •
As poet, anthologist, and critic. Dr Curnow has had considerable influence on New Zealand poetry since the 19305.
His most recent work, "You Will Know When You Get There." follows on his outstanding collection. “An Incorrigible Music." which won the poetry prize in the 1980 New Zealand Book Awards.
He has plans for a big new work, poetic and in parts autobiographical, and the fellowship will give him the opportunity to complete this. Next month, Dr Curnow will attend the Commonwealth Arts Festival to be held in conjunction with the Commonwealth Games at Brisbane. The Arts Festival Committee sent invitations to all Commonwealth countries, and on the advice .of the New' Zealand Literary Fund, Dr Curnow and a poet, Hone Tuwhare, were invited to represent New Zealand.
