Suva port cargo handling ‘disgraceful’

NZPA Suva The Pacific Forum Line (P.F.L.) is seriously concerned about the cargo-hand-ling rate at Suva, according to its chairman. Mr Harry Julian, who is also chairman of the New Zealand Shipping Corporation. -A He said that the unloading rate was the lowest in the Pacific region. “We are concerned because it is slowing down the turn-round time of our ships at'the port of Suva," he said.

The port sometimes managed brilyAabqut two con- , .tainers an ; hour, he said, compared ’ with between eight and 10 containers an hour at Sydney,' which was not at present a fast-working port. “In Noumea they handle up to 23 boxes an hour, and in Apia it is betw’een 15 and IV." Mr Julian said the P.F.L.. financed partly by the NewZealand Government, had become “innocent’ victims.” of the “disgraceful" handling , rate at Suva.
