Vandals deter park use

Vandalism and car breakins have apparently discouraged some people from visiting Lake Sumner' Forest Park. In its annual report the Forest Service said that park use had increased, largely because of the new St James walkway. However, park staff felt that recent police warnings about leaving cars unattended, after a spate of

car break-ins and vandalism, had had an adverse effect. A Christchurch conservancy senior forester. Mr A. D. Griffiths, said that Lake Sumner had more problems than other South Island forest parks because of hut accessibility and the lack of resident park staff. Staff now removed all food and equipment after finishing working in the park. Huts

formerly used for storage had been broken into repeatedly and in one case, a washing machine had been stolen from Boyle Base. Visitors to the three park huts, stayed 2804 bed-nights in the year ended in March, compared with 2401 bednights the previous year.
