Clergy urge rethink on Samoan issue
PA Auckland Three • leading ■ churchmen have sent a telegram to two Cabinet Ministers urging a delay in the setting aside of the Privy Council decision on the citizenship status of Western Samoans. The telegram was sent jointly by the heads of the Anglican, Roman Catholic and Presbyterian Churches. The signatories were the Anglican Primate of New
Zealand, the Most Rev. Paul Reeves; the Most Rev. Thomas Williams, the Catholic Metropolitan; and the Moderator of the Presbyterian General Assembly, the Rt Rev. L.. R. Hampton. The telegram reads: “We urge you to delay setting aside of Privy Council decision on citizenship status of Western Samoans on Citizenship (Western Samoa) Bill before it is referred back to
Parliament. "The seriousness of the issue indicates the need for further discussion.” The telegram was sent to the Acting Prime Minister, Mr Maclntyre, the AttorneyGeneral, Mr McLay, and the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, Mr Peter Wilkinson. It has been endorsed by the president of the Federation of Labour, Mr W. J. Knox.
