PA Wellington , -Petrocorp's Kaimiro 1 well near' New Plymouth has drilled hydrocarbons, accord-, ing to the company. The find was not. unexpected. jjElydrocarbons. are organic compounds , made up entirely ,of carbon and. hydrogen, such as’ the. fossil, fuels, natural gas and crude oil. Petrocorp said that the well, 16km south of New Plymouth, had reached 3801 m. It was scheduled to go to 5000 m.

At 3600 m the well had reached the top of a stratum known as the Kapuna formation. “Since then there have been some indications of hydrocarbons, as was expected in the sequence;” Petrocorp said. The well would now be logged, with tests to be carried out before drilling was restarted. It could be some time before the significance of the find is established, according to industry sources.
