No upsets in U.S. Open

NZPAFlushing Meadow, New York Third-seeded Ivan Lendl, of Czechoslovakia, defeated Harry Solomon 6-3, 6-0, 6-1 and llth-seeded Mats Wilander, of Sweden, defeated another American, Tim Wilkison, 6-4, 6-1, 7-6 to set up their fourth round match in the United States Open tennis championships yesterday. This is a rematch of their fourth round meeting in the French Open in June when

Wilander upset Lendl in five sets on the slow clay courts in Paris. He went on to win the tournament to become the youngest player to win a grand slam title. Lendl, aged 22, was just too strong for Solomon. Lendl, who has yet to drop a set, was 1-3 down in the opening set. Then he began to pound away with his groundstrokes and won the next 13 games. Solomon finally won a game to pull to 21 in the third set. In the last five games of the opening set, Lendl lost just seven points. In the second set Lendl lost 12 points. The entire match took one hour and 40 minutes. Lendl has won 10 tournaments this year and more than ?1 million in prize money, but has never won a grand slam , singles title. Against the aggressive Wilkison, Wilander had few problems and only in the final set did Wilander have any anxious moments. Against Eric Korita, an American ranked 335th in

the world and who had to come through the qualifying tournament to play in his first Grand Prix event, Yannick Noah, of France, was expected to have an easy third round victory. However, it turned out just the opposite as Noah was forced to rely on all his guile, his strong serving and a steady and calm nerve to defeat the hard serving Korita. He won 7-5, 6-7, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in three hours and thirty-two minutes on a windy stadium court before an afternoon record crowd of 20,792. The women’s top seed, Martina Navratilova, of the United States, and the defending champion and thirdseeded Tracey Austin, of the United States, won their third round matches easily. Navratilova, aged 25, winning her 67th match in 68 this year, beat Nancy Yeargin of the United, States, 6-3, 6-3. Austin, aged 19, playing in only her seventh tournament of the year, defeated Jo Durie, of Bristol, England, 64, 6-3.
