NZPA Canberra The Australian drought will cost at least sAust22oo million in lost agricultural production, the National Farmers’ Federation predicted
The N.F.F. president, Mr Michael Davidson, said the drought was among the worst on record. He said more than half of Australia’s 170,000 farmers were hit by drought and for some, it was the third consecutive year. He said winter grain production would be down '35 per cent, or a fall of sAustlloo million in the value of crop production. ■ "Some areas of New South Wales and Queensland are expected to be down 60 per cent in crop production, with many individual farmers facing total crop failure,” Mr Davidson said.
