Games reject upsets

PA Hamilton Commonwealth Games reject Linda Persson caused the first real upset of the Yonnex national badminton championships in Hamilton last evening. The unseeded Persson beat her North Shore team-mate and number four seed. Katrin Blair, in straight games in the quarterfinals of the international (open) women's singles. 11-7 11-4. Both Persson and Blair were nominated for the Games team by the N.Z. Badminton Association, but missed out on final selection. Persson now plays top seed Robyn Denton (Auckland) in today’s semi-finals, and second seed Toni Whittaker (Auckland) meets the third seed, Alison

Sinton (Waitemata). Persson also combined with Auckland's Steve Lobb to beat the fourth-seeded Blair and Auckland’s Chris Bullen in the quarter-finals of the mixed. Top men s seed Graeme Robson (Auckland) had to struggle through his quarter-final against Games team-mate and fifth seed, Philip Horne (North Shore) after making a ,slow start to the match. Robson lost the first game 156. but won the next two games and the match 15-11 and 15-7. He will play Aucklander and fourth seed John Miles in today's semi-finals. Second and fourth seeds Bullen and Steve Wilson (Canterbury) both moved through to the semifinals with straight game wins.
