Gulf island gets power

PA ■' Auckland Motutapu Island, beside Rangitoto in the Hauraki Gulf, has joined the national electricity grid. The island has fewer than 50 inhabitants, who have used diesel-generated power until recently. The Auckland Electric Power Board has now laid a submarine cable from Waiheke Island to Motutapu, and in a ceremony this week, the power was officially switched on.
