Hundreds out of a job

PA Auckland Several hundred freezing workers will be out of a job from today when the mutton chain at the Shortland plant in Auckland shuts. Within . a month, 415 workers will be laid off from the works, owned bv R. and W. Hellaby, Ltd. Of those, 348.wi1l go today. A further 67. mostly maintenance workers and freezer hands, will be advised of their redundancies progressively over the next month. They are to stay on for the extra time to tidy the plant And to offload the freezers as the meat is required. The Shortland beef chain will continue to run with 500 workers) So will the fellmongery, where 45 workers will continue to process skins from Taumarunui. The company's'group general manager, Mr John Dotchin, said the fellmongery was to have closed, too, but the company had agreed to a union request to keep it open.
