N.Z. wins four gold medals
New 'Zealand won four gold medals at the Pacific School Games swimming championships which finished in Brisbane yesterday. Three North Island swimmers, Sylvia Hume, 14 years girls’ 50m backstroke; Kirk Torrance, open secondary schools’ 100 m backstroke; and Craig Jones, 14 years boys’ 50m backstroke, all won their events and the New Zealand open primary girls’ freestyle relay team won their 4 x 50m event in record time.
New Zealand teams did well in the relays and won several silver medals. The girls' 14 years 4 x. 50m medley team was runner-up as was the girls’ open primary medley team. Also second were the boys’ open primary 4 x 50m medley
team, the boys’ 14 years 4 x 50m freestyle side and the boys’ open primary 4 x 50m freestyle team. Michael Kelly, of Canterbury, was third in the open primary boys’ 100 m breastroke, and Tracy Black, of Canterbury, was placed in the open primary girls’ 100 m butterfly, the open primary 100 m freestyle and the girls’ 13 years 50m backstroke.
Four New Zealand swimmers set Australian school records during the championships. They were Richard Tapper and Craig Jones, both in the boys’ 14 years 50m backstroke, Sylvia Hume in the girls’ 14 years 50m backstroke and Kirk Torrance in the open secondary, boys’ 100 m backstroke.
