Wind overturns plane
A man escaped injury when his home-built plane was overturned by wind on the runway at Christchurch Airport yesterday afternoon. The pilot was manoeuvering his light aircraft on to the runway when the wind flipped the plane over, but he managed to escape before it
caught fire. He already had his fire extinguisher in action when 'the three airport fire control appliances arrived a few minutes later. The fire was put out immediately and the plane was towed to the private hangar.
A spokesman for Air Traffic Control. Mr John Petrie, said that the wind was not unusually strong. It was probably the light weight of the aircraft, and the angle it was at to the wind, which had caused the accident. The pilot was not available for comment last evening.
