Fifty more lambs shot
PA Auckland At least 50 lambs have been shot dead and another 20 injured on the Hawke family 'farm, near Paihia, this week. Detective Sergeant M. Tebbutt, of Kaikohe, who inspected the lambs yesterday said it seemed almost certain they were shot by the same person who last week killed 43 lambs on the adjacent property of Mr Tony Fell. Sergeant Tebbutt said it appeared that the lambs had been shot with a high-velo-city rifle. The bullets had gone through the lambs, and some had been shot several times. In both instances, the lambs were at the back of the properties, about half a kilometre from the road. Sergeant Tebbutt said there was no sign of how the shooter had arrived at the scene. No ewes were hit. The lambs were valued about $2O each. Mrs Koa Hawke, owner of the sheep and cattle property, said it was horrifying, to think that anyone would shoot lambs. About 1600 ewes were lambing on the farm this season. "It is hard to know who would do such a ghastly thing, You can’t work out the mentality of anyone who.' would do something like . that.” Cheviot shooting, page 3
