Man fraudulently used $l0,000 cheque
A man who- admitted fraudulently using a cheque, made out' for $10,583. was convicted and remanded in i custody to September 3 for a probation report and sentence when he appeared before Judge Fogarty in the District Court yesterday. David William Taylor, aged 27, unemployed (Mr B. J. Pelham), fraudulently used a cheque to obtain a financial advantage. He also admitted a charge of receiving the cheque. The two offences occurred on August 12. Sergeant L. F. Corbett said that overnight on July 27-28 the premises of Aldurwood Supplies was burgled. Initially' it was thought nothing had been stolen but later it was discovered that a signed cheque, with the amount left blank, was missing. On August 12 the stolen cheque, made out for $10,583, was banked in the defendant’s account. Taylor was apprehended later when attempting to withdraw money from the account. At first he told the police that he had won the money in a game of cards, but later said he had been given the
cheque in a city hotel, said Sergeant Corbett. Taylor claimed that the amount had been filled in when he received the cheque. It was his intention to divide the money had he withdrawn it. Sergeant Corbett said the cheque was recovered and no money had been obtained by the defendant. WHITEBAIT CHARGE A chef charged with stealing whitebait, valued at $lB4O, was remanded to September 23 for the taking of depositions. Leslie Francis Kelly, aged 35 (Mr S. L. Kaminski),, is alleged to have stolen the whitebait from his employer, the Carlton Hotel, between May 28 and July. 12. He was allowed bail of $750. ARSON CHARGES * A man described as' an unemployed teacher facing two charges of arson, was remanded in custody to September 10 without plea.' It is alleged that Lawrence Edward Lyons, aged 52 (Miss J. McCartney), yesterday wilfully set fire to property at 208 and 210 Worcester Street, owned by William Merritt. While on remand at Sunnyside Hospital the defendant was ordered to undergo a
psychiatric examination. ■ FRAUD CHARGE A man. aged 36, charged with fraudulently ' using a hire purchase agreement to obtain $7940 for a caravan firm was remanded to September 3. No plea was entered bv the defendant, ’ who. at the request of counsel (Dr W. G. G. A. Young), was granted interim suppression of his name. The application was on domestic grounds.. Dr Young said the charge was the first of a series his client would be facing. Bail was set at $l5OO. COMMUNITY SERVICE Two sisters earlier convicted on eight joint charges of thefts from shops, involving goods to a total value of $441, were each ordered to do 60 hours of community service when they appeared for sentence. Although Maureen May Fairburn, aged 35, a labourer, and Carol Ann Sloss, aged 26, a housewife, were both first offenders the thefts had been deliberate and planned, said the Judge. The women, who admitted the offending, which took place on July 6, had visited shops in Bishopdale,‘Shirley,
and New Brighton and. had used a pram and a push chair to unload the stolen items into their car. $2OOO BAIL A man charged with stealing $1750 in cash, the property of Robert Arthur Rose, was’ remanded on bail of $2OOO to September 3. No plea was entered by Michael John Dixon, aged 21, a labourer, who is charged with having committed the offence on August 15. Bail was not opposed by the police but a substantial surety was sought. LSD CHARGE Tony Longstaffe. aged 22, unemployed, was remanded without plea to September 10 on a charge of possessing lysergide (LSD). The offence is alleged to have taken place on August 18. Bail was set at $BOO. THEFT CHARGE A man charged with stealing a pigskin shirt, a leather “bomber" jacket, and a woman’s suede jacket, to a total value of $706, was remanded on bail to September 3. Patrick Cunningham, aged 36, is alleged to have stolen the items, the property of Naturally New Zealand, on ■ August 6.
