Payments to farmers

Parliamentary reporter Supplementary minimum jrice payments to sheep and reef farmers averaged about 14 per cent of their gross income in 1981-82, and about 1.5 per cent for dairy farmers. The Minister of Agriculture, Mr Maclntyre, said these were the figures for the first year of the scheme. It was too early in the 1982-83 year to forecast production, prices, and supplementary minimum prices with confidence, he said. But it was expected that milkfat would not require supplementation. Payments would be needed only for meat and wool. Accordingly, it was expected that S.M.P. payments would represent about 13 per cent of gross farm income for the average beef and sheep farmer, Mr Maclntyre said.
