‘More research needed’

PA Hamilton More research was, needed on the effects of unemployment, said Labour’s spokesman on health, Mrs Ann Hercus, recently.Overseas studies had shown, that a 1 per cent rise in unemployment led to a 4 per cent rist in suicide and a 6 per cent rise in homicide, she told the New Zealand Psychological Society’s conference in Hamilton.

Unemployment also led to a 3 per cent rise in first admissions to mental hospitals and a 4 per cent rise in prison admissions. “Those statistics represent an appalling individual and community price to pay for unemployment, on top of the dole,” said Mrs .Hercus. “They also have enormous implications for an increased strain on public expenditure, - especially on health and justice, at a time when expendi-

ture is being foreseeably reduced in those areas.” The small amount of existing New Zealand unemployment research should reach decision-makers urgently, and more care should 'be taken counselling the unemployed. Interviewers should explain the benefits system and identify individuals under special stress or with need of . remedial help, Mrs Hercus said. .
