Mr Maclntyre, in answer to a question asked in Parliament yesterday. He was speaking ol farmers on non-irrigated light land. Labour’s spokesman on agriculture. Sir Basil Arthur, asked Mr Maclntyre whether that assessment was true for Canterbury mixed farms in average to light soil areas, and not irrigated.

Mr Maclntyre said the net loss was calculated in a recent published model prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture in which lamb returns were set at $17.50 net a head: wool. $2.80 net a kilogram: and cast-for-age ewes. $7 net. These were not official prices, but were used only for the purposes of the model, he said. Mr Maclntyre said that other farms in New Zealand would face net losses higher than Canterbury farmers.
