Protesters’ fund
PA Wellington A National Council of Churches trust fund to help meet the legal costs and fines of Springbok tour protesters has been extended to include other protesters. Among them would be Bastion Point and Waitangi Day protesters. "It is up to the fund's trustees to decide the legitimacy of each case." said Bishop Edward Buckle, of Auckland, who moved the amendment extending the fund at the N.C.C.’s general meeting in Wellington yesterday.
He said the fund was to provide assistance' and support for individuals and their families suffering hardship. The meeting decided that the fund, which has up to now been raised by individual subscriptions, should be expanded by voluntary contributions from member
churches. An N.C.C. official told a reporter that the fund, which was up to $lOOO earlier this year, was down to $2OO. The trustees are the general secretary of the N.C.C., the Rev. Angus MacLeod or his appointee, the chairman of the N.C.C.’s Church and Society Commission, and the executive director of the Presbyterian Church.
