PA Wellington Submissions on the bill introduced in Parliament to override the Privy Council's ruling, on the 'Western Samoan citizenship issue, have to be made by Monday. The Citizenship (Western Samoa)/ bill, (which Yj effectively revokes the citizenship rights recently bestowed on Western Samoans by the Privy Council, was introduced on Tuesday evening and yesterday Parliament's
Foreign Affairs Select Committee called for submissions. “In spite of the need for urgency the committee has decided to hear submissions from as many people as possible,” said ,the committee’s chairman, Mr P. I. Wilkinson (Nat.. Kaipara) yesterday. “Submissions are called for immediately and the time for making .them will close on Monday, at noon.”
Mr Wilkinson said it was hoped that representatives of the Samoan community would assist the committee in a “careful and proper study of the legislation." The committee had decided that the hearings needed to be concluded “with a minimum of delay” because immigration and passport administration in Apia was suspended until the legislation was passed, Mr Wilkinson said.
