Fifth straight netball win

From SALLY LINDSAY, in Blenheim The Canterbury netball team 'has scored its fifth straight win at the national championships in Blenheim, while Canterbury Country and South Canterbury have recorded their fifth straight losses. Canterbury thrashed its old rival, Canterbury Country, 41-8. and had' a closer game with South Canterbury, but still came out ahead at 40-20. Canterbury’s scores in both games could have been higher if all teams at the nationals had not been forced to fight blustery nor-westers. South Canterbury nearly pulled off the coup of the day, losing by only 2 goals to Rotorua with the score at SO--28. South Canterbury had the game within its grasp. levelling the score at 22-22 10 minutes before the end of the match, but a magnificent interception by Rotorua's goal-keeper, Maxine Perfect, lest South Canterbury its chance of victory. Canterbury romped home in its other win against Canterbury Country in another match where it was never extended. Although Canterbury Country made changes to its lineup, bringing on Beryl Wilson as goal-attack and shifting Maxine Loffhagen to centre, the side could never penetrate Canterbury’s tight defence. Canterbury adjusted to the nor-westers well, shortening its passes and playing very crisp netball. Country was completely overwhelmed and played a very scrappy game with wild passes and hurried attempts at goal. Country’s goal-keeper, Maxine Blomquist, kept Canterbury’s goal-shooter, Anne Davidson, under pressure, but Davidson still finished the game with a high goal average. Auckland also gave Country a hiding, winning 41-12. Country’s defence was non- . existent outside of the goal circle and gaps were left for

Auckland to score freely. Today Canterbury plays Hawke’s Bay and North Shore while Canterbury Country meets Waikato and South Canterbury. South Canterbury's other game will be against North Shore.
