Police revise cuts plan
Wellington reporter The Commissioner of Police, Mr R. J. Walton, has announced a revised savings 'package to reach the 3 per cent cuts target.. The Cabinet decided on Monday that nine rural oneman stations (Would not be closed. Closing 1 the stations would have saved $lOO,OOO this financial year. In its place the Police Department has decided gradually to jdrop police numbers by 10 to 5022 and remove "low-priority positions.” i The revised Savings package will save, $1.5 million from cutting back in building and operations:; $752,000 by disposing of surplus property; $llO,OOO by suspending the; cadet scheme; ‘and $600,000 by loss of 10 staff, and by more efficiently using staff with low workloads. ; Mr Walton said that'staff, with low' workloads could help at big stations feeling the effects of the cuts. the number of recruits accepted by the department for training each year, Mr Walton said. The .scheme normally recruited 40 cadets, but in its place more adults would be recruited for the six-month training courses.
