Judge quashes suit
NZPA-Reuter Washington A United States Federal Court Judge has formally dismissed the Government’s anti-monopoly suit against the American Telephone and Telegraph company (A.T.T.) after changes were made in a settlement between the two parties. The decision by District Court Judge Harold Greene means the splitting off of 22 local telephone companies, two-thirds of the A.T.T.’s assets, can proceed. Judge Greene withheld approval until both sides accepted several changes he had demanded in their settlement proposal, mainly to help local telephone companies. A.T.T. has six months to submit plans to divest itself of the local companies in exchange for the Justice Department’s dropping the suit. A.T.T. has said it hopes to divest itself of the 22 companies on January 1, 1984. The divested firms will be organised into seven regional companies.
