Union Nelson on run
The problem-plagued container ship Union Nelson will resume calling at Lyttelton. After ,'a meeting yesterday, run by the Federation of Labour, waterside unions and. the Union Steam SJiip Company. which owns the vessel, reached an agreement to allow her to return to port. Her first call will be made on August 28 as part of her normal 14-day run between
Onehunga. New Plymouth, and Nelson. " < '/• Since her maiden voyage in April, the $8 million Union Nelson has been unable to return .to Lyttelton because of. what is. basically a demarcations dispute between, the Waterfront Workers’ Union and the Lyttelton Harbour Board Employees’ Union. Points at issue have been where the vessel will berth, what equipment will be used to unload her,: and who, will
be involved in unloading her. Things, came to a head, recentlywhen the Union Shipping Group gave the parties involved a week to sort out the problems, or the ship would be laid up. This deadline expired 10 days ago, but the company’s threat had the desired effect. During the last week the parties involved have made an earnest attempt to resolve the dispute, resulting in yesterday's development.
