Man faces assault charge

The tyres on a police patrol car were slashed and two constables were attacked during a fracas in the New Brighton Tavern car park on Thursday night, said Sergeant G. C. Jones in the District Court yesterday.

Appearing before Judge Pain. Charles Stuart Tawha, aged 24, a driver, was remanded on bail of $l5OO to September 22 for a defended hearing on a charge that with intent to injure he assaulted Derek Brvan Shaw.

Hamu Anthony Hodge, aged 23. unemployed, who also faces a charge of assaulting Derek Bryan Shaw, a constable, with’intent to injure, did not plead. Hodge, who is additionally charged with using obscene language in the bar of a New Brighton tavern, and with resisting a constable in the execution of his duty, was remanded on bail of $l5OO to August. 27. No pleas were entered.

Katene John Herewini. aged 26. unemployed, was convicted and fined $lOO after admitting he used obscene language. After being warned about his conduct Sergeant Jones said Herewini had continued to shout abuse at a Maori police officer. Sergeant Jones said the defendant seemed to be upset at the sight of a Maori policeman. Herewini told the police that he liked- to voice his opinion and it was a free country. Ted Moana Bristowe. aged 23. unemployed, was convicted and fined $6O after admitting using obscene language in the car park. ■ Neither offered any explanation. (DEPOSITIONS) A scrub cutter who appeared on a joint charge with two others of robbing a motorist of his car keys, and of unlawfully taking a car, valued at $BOOO, was re-

manded to September 30 for the taking of depositions.

Tini Te Waaka Raymond Te Rangiita. aged 21 (Mr M. J. Glue), was allowed bail of $lOOO, with two sureties of the same amount, and he was ordered to report twice weekly to the police. The charges alleged the robbing of a motorist, Donald William Cock, of his car keys, and unlawfully taking Mr Cock’s car. They relate to an incident in which a man was allegedly beaten senseless after he stopped his car in Park Terrace to help three men who appeared to be working on a broken-down motor-cycle. Mr Glue said his instructions were that the charge would be defended. Mr Glue added that no depositions date had been set for the two alleged’ co-of-fenders who had appeared in the Children and Young Persons' Court. (TRIAL) A man charged with robbing Garry William Mechen of a leather jacket, valued at $4OO, elected trial by jury. Anthony John Laurie Poa, aged 22, unemployed, was remanded in custody to September 16 for the taking of depositions. The offence is alleged to have taken place on August 12. DRUGS A youth, aged 19, who admitted possessing cannabis leaf, cannabis seeds, lysergide, and a pipe for the commission of an offence against the Misuse of Drugs Act, was convicted and remanded on bail to September 14 for a probation report and sentence.

Sergeant G. C. Jones said that when a search warrant was executed at the Kaiapoi address of John Henry Piper, a labourer, 245 cannabis seeds, cannabis leaf, a pipe and roach holder, and an LSD tablet in tinfoil, were found in his bedroom.
