Parliamentary reporter More money was spent on vitamin supplements in 1981 than on any other non-pre-scription health product and the Health Department is planning further investigations into their use. Asked if the high consumption of vitamins could pose a danger to health, the Minister of Health (Mr Malcolm) has told Parliament that vitamin supplements by

themselves would not be dangerous. As with most substances. some could be dangerous if they were taken in “injudicious" quantities, however. He said that the Health Department recommended a balanced diet that did not require dietary supplements. Further investigation of the use of vitamin supplements in New Zealand would be made by the department.
