The day in Parlia ment
Parliament sat at 2.30 p.m. yesterday. Reports of the Terewhiti Licensing Trust and the Birkenhead Licensing Trust were tabled. Members moved 11 notices of motion. Ministers answered 17 questions. A private member’s bill in the name of Mr J. ’L. Hunt (Lab., New Lynn), the Adult Adoption Information Bill, was reported back by the Statutes Revision Committee, with amendments, and set down for second reading. The second reading debate on the Appropriation Bill (the Budget debate) was resumed and interrupted when the house rose for dinner at 5.30 p.m. Speakers were Miss Ruth Richardson (Nat., Selwyn), Mr D. F. Caygill (Lab., St Albans), Mr N. P. H. Jones (Nat., Invercargill), and Mr J. J. Terris (Lab., Western Hutt). The House resumed at 7.30 p.m. and the Budget, debate continued until the House rose at 10.30 p.m. Speakers were Mr J. J. Terris (Nat., Western Hutt), the Minister of Transport (Mr Gair), Mr G. T. Knapp (Social Credit, East Coast Bays), Mr S. D. Upton (Nat., Waikato), Mrs Margaret Shields (Lab., Kapiti), and Mr R. N. McClay (Nat., Taupo).
