Kiwi ingenuity fixes engine
A Christchurch Midget car racer, Gordon Roxburgh (left), can face the approaching speedway season with renewed enthusiasm thanks to the “Kiwi ingenuity” of Graeme Fineran. Fineran, a Christchurch motor reconditioner and a rival of Roxburgh’s on the Ruapuna track, has used New Zealand materials to fix the American-imported Sesco engine on his colleague’s vehicle. The job, which took about seven months, has saved Roxburgh about $4OOO on the cost of importing a new engine block from the United States. The former American engine block had caused Roxburgh all sorts of problems last season but the replacement has given him fresh hope of matching the Volkswagons used by most Midget car racers. “I think Graeme has made a better one than the original,” Roxburgh said. “This one hasn’t got sleeves in the bores like the original and so there is no way it can lead water or anything to the cylinders. With Roxburgh is a mechanic for the car, David Horck.
