Decision on water birth awaited
Parliamentary reporter The Health Department will decide within the next week whether prosecutions will be laid or whether disciplinary action will be taken over the case of a Wellington women who recently gave birth to a baby in a bath, the Minister of Health (Mr Malcolm) has told Parliament. Replying to a question, Mr Malcolm said that the safety of underwater births was regarded by the department as unproved. Under the Nurses Act, 1977, it was an offence to deliver a baby if there was not a qualified person in attendance. The existing legislation was considered to be adequate in dealing with the case of the Wellington woman. The department was collecting and examining details of the case to see whether there had been a breach of the law,. >■<
