Pacific Community 'unlikely’
PA Wellington The Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) has said that he does not think a Pacific Economic -Community will be formed within the next 20 years. Mr Muldoon told the Chambers of Commerce annual dinnerj-at Whangarei that the European Economic Community was a natural progression from the European iron and steel community and a natural linking of countries in a similar stage of development. But the Pacific was “quite different.”
In what he said was a repeat of part of his speech to the Australian Chambers of Commerce in Sydney recently, he emphasised that most of the Pacific economies were fragile, and asked how they could' fit into a Pacific Economic Community. “I have to say that I do not see such a concept coming to fruition inside at least the next two decades,” he said. Many . Pacific nations would be dependent on external aid “for as far ahead as one can see.”
