lost overboard in heavy seas. He had given up his job and put his life’s savings into the project. Mr Evans had nearly completed the : final 1200-mile stage of his journey from the Azores when his 7.5-metre yacht Misty capsized in heavy seas, 400 miles off Falmouth, on July 11.
The Buran, a Polish cargo ship, sighted the yacht, which had lost its mast, and launched a rescue bid in gale-force winds. A German woman, Suzanne Reger, who was travelling with Mr Evans, was rescued and was taken back on the Buran to Germany.
