Council wants panel to look at refuse sites
The Waimairi District Council favours an independent panel of three members td consider three sites for the proposed northern transfer station in Redwood.
The Christchurch Metropolitan Refuse Disposal Committee’s site choices are the northern side of Styx Mill Road, to the west of Cavendish Road, and land bounded by Cavendish Road, Sturrocks Road and Styx Mill Road.
The council last evening agreed that a notifed application for the sites should be heard urgently by a panel of non-councillors before a District Scheme change is made to include the transfer station.
A motion by Cr W. T. Rice to defer this decision pending discussions with the refuse committee seeking the scheme change first was lost.
Cr Rice said that he considered that objectors to the station site would be seriously disadvantaged if the notified application was heard before the scheme change. Cr I. Calvert said that if the notified application was heard first, the council could then decide whether to proceed with the scheme change. The council’s chairman, Mr D. B. Rich, said after the meeting that a legal opinion was that the notified application should be heard first.
