Rally bridesmaid sets eyes on big day
The “bridesmaid” of rallying, Auckland’s Tony Teesdale, has his heart set on being the “bride” at the conclusion of the third round of the New Zealand rally championships at Nelson this week-end.
In past years Teesdale has always been just behind the winner — the “bridesmaid” behind the “bride.” This year, wins in the first two rounds at Tokoroa and Rotorua have given him the over-all lead approaching the third round and with his placing as first New Zealander home in the Motogard International Rally he has got the championship firmly fixed in his eye.
Teesdale and his . Escort RSIBOO has secured first seed and starting from the second spot is Alan Mitchell (RS1800), of Feilding. Mechanical faults in the earlier rounds gave him
disappointing results and he, too, will be driving hard on Saturday in this all-import-ant round.
Another who will be charging the course is Neil Allport, another Aucklander driving an RSIBOO Escort. He is lying third-equal in overall points at, present. The top-seeded South Island driver is Barry Robinson (Southland) in a Chevette 2300. He is seeded fourth.
Reg Cook (Auckland) is at number five in the Datsun Bluebird Turbo.
Most Nelson eyes will be upon Dave Parkes (Nelson) in his Escort 1600, who is seeded ninth. Parkes has turned in many excellent performances' in an underpowered car and he must be highly regarded for one of the top placings. Tenth seed is filled by Paul Adams (Auckland), who
in his tiny Toyota Starlet, is lying second in championship standings. He has astounded many of the top contenders with the excellent performances achieved in this lowpowered car. They include a third and a sixth in rounds two and three and, incredibly, a ninth placing over-all in the international rally.
The rally will be held over seven special stages — all of them through afforested areas. First cars will get away at 8 a.m. on Saturday and drive through the Hira State Forest. Stages two and seven ape through Baigents’ forest at the top of Spooners Range and Pigeon Valley and stages 3,4, 5 and 6 are through the' Golden Downs State Forest — a course of 217.35 km and described by the Nelson Car Club organisers as “excellent?
