N.Z. has system to identify meat

PA Wellington Australia’s export beer scandal has prompted New Zealand tp set up a laboratory system which can distinguish between types of meat, according to a departmental report. The Ministry of Agriculture has discussed the new system, saying it had been introduced after kangaroo and horse meat was discovered in an Australian shipment. The United States Department of Agriculture had required New Zealand to set up laboratory testing to verify animal. species, and to improve surveillance and control over meat and offal distribution.

Tabled in Parliament, the report said that methods had been developed which could distinguish between ~ all domesticated livestock species, as well as between deer, chamois, wapiti, thar, wallaby, hofse, dog, and opossum. A special monitoring programme sampling packaged products in stores is now in use. The Ministry also said that Britain had sought improved surveillance of products. Inedible and edible animal products were being watched “to deter diversion of ineligible products into export market channels.”
