Smoke levels higher
Smoke levels in Christchurch inner suburban areas are higher than last year, according to figures released by the Health Department. However, smoke levels during the months of June and July for the city centre and outer suburban areas were on a par with last year. The Health Department report says the greater use of the domestic, open fire or possible changes in household
heating patterns could be responsible for this increase. Nitrogen oxide levels in the centre of the city also showed a significant rise. The principle source of this pollutant is the motorvehicle. ' . Carbon monoxide levels exceeded the World Health Organisation > eight-hour standard in Manchester Street on 14 days during July.
