Ferry freight halted
PA ■ Wellington A strike by the Blenheim branch of the National Union of Railwaymen has. stopped freight movement across Cook: Strait and' disrupted week-end ferry sailings. . The Railways Air-Sea Services manager, Mr Brian 'Lundy, said that all sailings today of the Aratika and Arahanga and a return sailing of the Aranui had been cancelled, although the pas-
senger vessel Aramoana would maintain her normal schedule. About 20, members of the Blenheim branch walked off the job yesterday morning in protest against the condition of an amenities room. A meeting in Blenheim at noon yesterday with Railways officials failed to end the strike. Mr Lundy said the quantity of freight waiting in
Wellington and Picton to cross the strait was insignificant at this stage. The secretary of the Blenheim branch of the union, Mr Brian Cameron, said the men were prepared to stay out until moves were made to rectify the amenities room conditions. The strike action was the result of years of broken promises, he said.
