Football maintains lead
There were several outstanding performances in the latest round of division one inter-club squash. Christchurch Football maintained a useful lead in the mens competition with a decisive 8-2 win. but Linwood forced a gritty win. 8-2. over High School Old Boys to regain second place. this was-in spite of its top player. Craig Hibbert, suffering a surprise loss in a • close battle with, the determined Lawrence Skurr, after failing to clinch two match balls in the fifth game. Robbie Turner I Linwood) began well to lead. 2-0. against John MacKinlay (H. 5.0.8. but then had to struggle hard for his win. after seven match balls in the fifth game. Led by Rod Hayes. Christchurch I thrashed its'No. 2 team. 10-0. to move into third place.
Burnside suffered another loss but its two wins were fine ones. Mark Crosbie looked very sharp for the New Zealand Junior Open, which will be played at Dunedin. His win over Barry Taylor (Suburbs) was surprisingly decisive. Andrew Smith also shone in a fine comeback.
Vistalite Sumner further tightened its stranglehold on the womens competition, while its closest rivals. Burnside I, slipped further behind-with a shock loss to Sumner 11.
The first-round winner sorely missed Susan Wasley but the coup de grace came with Kate Carpinter s fine upset win over Kathy Hargreaves. It was a fastmoving -'match with many fine rallies. Carpinter volleyed well, keeping the pressure oh to gain the edge in the fifth game.
Only Mary Hunt won for Burnside. with another strong display. Sumner II moved into thin! place with this win while the young Burnside II team scored 'another good win to take fourth place.
