Transport options supported

Organised car-pools and more consideration of cycleways could be used in Christchurch’s transport system, said Cr Vicki Buck after, returning from an Urban Transport Council meeting in Auckland. Cr Buck, at a meeting of the Canterbury United Council’s urban transport committee vesterday, suggested that council staff should investigate these two matters, as well as assist in the development of the electric vehicle at the University of Canterbury. The committee agreed, and a report will be prepared as soon as possible. "There is a total lack of

planning for pedestrians and cycles in Auckland. Ferries are the only way cyclists can get across the harbour because they are not allowed over the Auckland Harbour bridge," Cr Buck said. “Christchurch does . not have the urban sprawl problem in its transport system, but there is no reason to be complacent,” she said. Cycleways had been suggested in Christchurch in 1974, and although some had been implemented, there was still a long way to go. Cr Buck said that sharing resources through an organised car-pool was rhuch better than planning more motorways.
