Stokes seeks clearance
Gerard Stokes, the Canterbury and New Zealand rugby league prop, has applied for a clearance to spend the 1982-83 northern season with the Workington Town club in England: His request • was favourably received by his club, Eastern Suburbs, s and the Canterbury board of control, and will be forwarded to the New Zealand Rugby League. Stokes said yesterday that
his plans had been formulated after discussions with * his Kiwi team-mate, Shane Varley (Auckland), who played with Workington Town last, season. Workington Town has been promoted to the British first division as a result of its third placing in the 1981-82 second division. “Shane told me during the tour of Australia that Workington was on the lookout for
a prop," Stokes said. “The club contacted me last week. “Experience in Britain would be invaluable. I have always wanted to have a season over there,” he said. Stokes is the second of the younger Kiwis to seek a temporary transfer to Britain. The Auckland scrum-half, Clayton Friend, hopes to join Carlisle, which has also been elevated to the first division.
