The temperature in Christchurch reached 18deg. Jh the afternoon. The record temperature for August is 22.8 deg., recorded in 1970. *■- Forecasters were expecting a probably short-lived south-westerly change during
the night, but little or no rain. The winds yesterday closed seven South Island ski-fields — Broken River, Amuri, Temple Basin, Dobson, Ohau, Tekapo, and Mount Cook-Tasman Glacier. Mount Hutt remained open, although conditions were far from ideal. Rain was falling at Arthur's Pass and in other parts of the Alps yesterday afternoon, but little snow arrived with the westerly front and all mountain passes were reported clear.
