Activists rope ‘Maori land’
PA Kaitaia A Maori activist armed with an axe and a small band of supporters has blocked a road in the far north, claiming that it runs over Maori land. Tourists and people wanting . to use a county dump yesterday were turned back at the . road block yesterday by a man holding an axe. The block is set up near
houses in the Kaimaumau settlement, about 30km from’ Kaitaia. A rope was stretched across the road and a sign stating that it is Maori land has been erected. The .group’s leader and spokesman is said to be Mr Ray Renata, who was recently sent back from Australia. The police in Kaitaia would make no comment last evening.
