Mercury to stage show
Auckland’s Mercury Theatre is planning a national eight week tour next month at a cost of $250,000. ; In association with the Christchurch-based theatre promotion company, New Zealand Goldcrest Theatre Associates, the comedy “Once a Catholic” will be performed in' 12 centres, including Christchurch. ‘ The show, which has yet to be cast, will be directed by Jonathan Hardy, the Mercury’s artistic director. Although Mercury actors will
form the basic touring company, other performers will be recruited from throughout New Zealand. The Mercury’s promotions manager, Mr Karl Bradley, said Goldcrest had suggested the tour and would provide most of the finance. This would mainly go on transport and wages for the 14member cast. The tour will start in Auckland on September 13, and play seasons of three to five nights at the various centres, ending in Timaru on
November 6. Christchurch audiences can see it at the Theatre Royal from October 18 to 26. New Zealand Goldcrest Theatre Associates is an offshoot of an English company, and has been established in this country since the beginning of the year. A director, Mr lan Boswell of Christchurch, said the company aimed at promoting live'theatre and utilising as much New Zealand talent as possible..
