Shipping news British Shipbuilders get welcome boost
< British Shipbuilders was patting Itself .on the back last week, after it ’signed contracts on the same day to build two new ships. Besides signing a contract to build the new Liquigas liquefied petroleum gas. tanker, British Shipbuilders was awarded a com tract to build the replacement for the Atlantic Conveyor, which was sunk in the Falklands crisis.
It is expected that these boosts to the British shipbuilding industry will prbvide about 1000 men with work for the next two years. The Atlantic Conveyor's replacement is a 27.000-ton roll-on ship. She will be able to carry 2200 containers, three times the capacity of her sunken predecessor. as well as 1800 cars and trailers.
As part of plans for increased : fuel economy the new vessel will' be fitted with a slow-running diesel motor, giving her a service speed of 17.5 knots. With this new-motor her fuel consumption will be about 73 tonnes a day, compared with the 200 tonnes a day used by the Atlantic Conveyor/ ARRIVALS : . - Saturday Seaward Ace (8.52 a.m.) 10.234.
