Carlton adds further trophy to record
Carlton. the top-ranked women's hockey team in Christchurch. added the Mary Smith Trophy to its record, by defeating the leading teams from Malvern and Ashburton at the weekend.
Old Collegians from Ashburton and Carlton finished with a win and a draw each. The winner w’as decided on the difference of goals, and Carlton was clearly in the lead with a total of 11 goals in two games. Old Collegians had seven, having defeated Darfield 6-0. and drawn 1-1 with Carlton.
Carlton gained an easy 10-1 win over Darfield on Saturday morning, in spite of having only 10 players. However, its confidence w : as shaken later in the day. when Old Collegians took the initiative by scoring a goal early in the first half.
Darfield. representing the Malvern district, was beaten by superior teams, but it played with determination and displayed some constructive moves. Results and scorers:—
Carlton 10 (S. Haig 6, C. Thompson 3, M. Shand), Darfield 1 (S. Pearson). Old Collegians 6 (J. Mac Kay 3, N. Johnstone 2, K. Doig), Darfield 0.
Carlton 1 (C. Thompson), Old Coliegains 1 (T. Holland). Darfield v. Carlton
Darfield had little chance of matching Carlton's characteristic ball skills, and its positional control of the game.
By driving the ball laterally across the field, Carlton frequently caught Darfield unawares. With large gaps in the Darfield defence caused by players moving out of their positions.. Carlton easily' capitalised on the opposition's weaknesses. The bumpy ground at Hospital Corner hindered Carlton from scoring even more goals. Shirley Haig, continually mobile in the forward line, netted six goals. But Darfield's Sally Pearson had the consolation of scoring a goal past the New Zealand representative goal-keeper, Lesley Murdoch. The final score of 10-1 was an indication of Carlton's strength over all. Old Collegians v. Darfield
Having played a hard game against Carlton, Darfield was unable to put up much fight against a cohesive Collegians forward line. Three goals were netted by Collegians in the first half, one of which was a penalty stroke taken by Janice Mac Kay. Collegians came back after half-time to take full control, dominating the Darfield territory to bring their goal total to six. Carlton v. Old Collegians The feature match of the Mary Smith Trophy was the game between Carlton and Old Collegians. Carlton was missing three of its key players. .Nicky Turner, Lorraine Reeves, and Kathy Patterson, and seemed to lose some of their competitiveness when faced with a strong opponent.
Old Collegians went out to defeat the Christchurch team, and scored a goal in the opening minutes. Collegians' Toni Holland capitalised on a defensive error to shoot the ball in from a wide field position. Carlton's forward line initially had difficulty in finding forni. and lost possession of the ball through muddled passing. With a re-arranged forward line, many of Carlton's set passing moves floundered for lack of support.'But for the remainder of the first half, Carlton defended stoutly. Two Carlton goals were disallowed before Cathy Thompson equalised after a goal-mouth skirmish. Both teams played determinedly in the second half with combined team efforts, but neither side was able to score. The Collegians, back line was dominated by Kieran Doig. and the goal-keeper. Jan Bdothroyal. who repulsed many Carlton attempts. . In only its second year of existence, the Mary Smith Trophy stays with the leading Christchurch team. Last year's winner was Woolston.
