Wetlands
Sir, — The president of Save Our South Westland (Mr Malcolm Macßae) was recently reported as saying he saw "natural allies among ... those who favoured the draining of parts of Lake Wairarapa for farming.” There can be few surely who, after reading Derick Rooney's informative article (“The Press,” August 4), will believe such draining is in - Mr Des Dalgety’s words promoting “responsible development of natural resources.” Those wishing to learn more about the biological and hydrological importance of wetlands should obtain from the editor, Geoff Adlam, of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, a copy of the current issue (No. 15) of Freshwater Catch which has 20 pages devoted to this diminishing resource. The Wairarapa Catchment Board is preparing an environmental impact report On the polder scheme, to be completed by the end of the year, after which public submissions will be invited. — .Yours, etc., ERIC BENNETT.
