Conservation
Sir—Mr Dalgety and his anti-conservationist crusaders are to be commended for their concern for people and people's livelihood. It is a pity they don’t realise that conservationists’ . ultimate concern is precisely the same — but in the long term as‘against the short term. The authoritative “World Conservation Strategy”
report prepared in 1980 by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, in . collaboration with the Food and ' Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations, warns that the future welfare and perhaps survival of the human race on this planet will depend on our willingness to halt the worldwide destruction of native forests and- other natural resources. No exception is made of New Zealand. The Whataroa . meeting has shown once again. that the popular feeling so easily aroused against conservationists is based on one thing: ignorance. Therefore, I am increasing my subscription to the Native Forests Action ? Council.—Yours, etc., HARRY EVISON. Dunedin, August. 6, 1982.
