The Budget

Sir,—At the stroke of a pen. That is how Mr Muldoon has slashed the status of the ordinary man. In particular the single person has been ignored and discriminated against — as usual; as have the lower income groups. Recently _ I entered into a superannuation agreement with the A.M.P. Society. Part of the attraction of this contract was a tax-free payout at maturity. Now Mr Muldoon, in his latest exhibition of madness, has imposed a 31 per cent tax on the return, thus taxing the scheme twice. Apart from the unfairness of this tax I would liken it to a Sheriff of Nottingham scheme in its illegality. Perhaps someone should tell the Prime Minister, before his office is terminated, that the $3OO average wage is not the sum that the average person is struggling on. If that myth were exploded, perhaps some reality would be allowed to permeate his policies. — Yours, etc., DON MACKENZIE. August 7, 1982.
