Wedding draws viewers
Broadcasting reporter New Zealanders love a wedding. According to the latest McNair television audience survey, the wedding on “Close to Home,” on July 27 attracted 33 per cent of viewers, taking it to second place in the ratings for the first time in ages.
Usually “Close to Home," is lucky to make it into the top 30 programmes in the ratings and averages an audience of about. 20 per cent.
The decision by the “Close to Home” team to lash out on a luxurious wedding for Gayle and Gavin paid dividends for one episode at least, but only time will tell if the new viewers will continue to watch the programme after all the wedding fuss dies down. The top programme for the week was the second part of the movie, “The Other Side of the Mountain.” Other top-rating programmes were “Siegfried and Roy: Superstars of Magic,” “The Young . Doctors," and, once again, .“Benny Hill.” Programmes that did not fare so well in the ratings included the more high-brow efforts such as “Brideshead Revisited,” . which has dropped to only 15 per cent and other Festival programmes, such as “Close Harmony,” (19 per cent) and the New Zealand film, “A Woman of Good Character,” (12 per cent).
