Miller’s cell raided
NZPA Sydney Prison officers at the week-end raided Harry M. Miller’s cell at Long Bay Jail, searching for evidence that a cattle-sale catalogue had been printed without permission at the prison. The search, led by Superintendent Eric Quamby, was ordered by the New South Wales Corrective Services Minister (Mr Rex Jackson). A spokesman for Mr Jackson denied a report that another booklet, belie/ed to be the 1981 sale catalogue, had been
found during the search. "Not a thing was found — nothing has been found. At the present time no evidence has been found to indicate that such a book has been or is being printed at the jail." Mr Jackson has ordered an inquiry by senior officers of the department into allegations that the booklet — advertising a sale next month of Simmental cattle at Miller’s property, at Manilla in Northern New South Wales — was printed in the Malabar Training Centre’s printing workshop.
“There is an inquiry under way into the allegations that have been made concerning the book.” the spokesman said. He did not know when the inquiry would be concluded. He confirmed that Mr Jackson had received an application for Miller's early release from the jail, where he is serving a three-year sentence for the $Au5t728,137 Computicket fraud. The spokesman said he had “no, idea" who had made the application on Miller’s behalf.
