Rotorua ’quake measured

PA Rotorua Data gathered on the earthquakes ■ which jolted Rotorua on Friday shows that the strongest measured .only about 2.8 on the Richter scale, according to a Department of Scientific and Industrial Research scientist, Dr ■' John Latter.

v However, the shallow earthquakes were focused near city homes and would have been felt quite sharply, he. said yesterday. Dr Latter said that seismic activity in recent weeks had been “abnormally" high, earthquakes being felt in several areas round Rotorua. . However, Rotorua was prone to peaks in seismic activity and the . latest tremors could be considered another such peak. ■ “No doubt it will die away soon," he said.
