Auchentoshan hits running rail
There was good reason why Auchentoshan failed to justify her- favouritism for the Cashmere Plate at Riccarton on Saturday. The Double Speed filly came in contact with the running rail about 200 metres after the start and from that point onward was never galloping kindly, according to her rider, R. J. McCann. When questioned about the incident McCann told the Canterbury Jockey Club’s judicial committee that Auchentoshan had collided with the running rail after she had shied away from runners on her outer but she had suffered no interference. The official observation confirmed that Auchentoshan, although ridden with vigour after entering the straight, failed to run on. Although there were four falls and six riders were tossed from their mounts in the jumping races on Saturday no horses were injured and only one jockey received slight bruising. That was Stephen Allen, who received slight bruising of the left knee when dislodged from Sheikle three fences from home in the Grand National Steeplechase. Paul Goss and "Aii” Robinson, the respective riders
of Sugarmugundi and Bymai in the same event, were both uninjured according to the official report. Sugarmugundi fell at Cutts’ Brush on the first circuit of the race and Bymai came down at the same fence . second time round. Cutts’ Brush also tripped Shirlina in the Enfield Steeplechase. 'But she.'was quickly caught by her amateur rider, K. Larsen, and was remounted to complete the course. Harold Pa.teman and Tane Matthews both escaped unscathed when tossed from their respective mounts, WilJiedee and Tanner, during the running of the Ace of Clubs Hurdles.
Up The Creek, which finished at the tail of the field in the International Harvester Winter Cup, was found to have bled during the race. On returning to the birdcage he received attention from the club’s veterinary surgeon.
